I Was a Cool Customer

butter wouldn’t melt

on my bulbous nerve endings

oh man     I was the spontaneity

of ha     the nonexistent leg joints

of an apiary   you wouldn’t believe

my demeanor   I was feline

sleeping apparel and lament

I was the highest

yellow fruit

Angela Ball’s 7th book of poetry, Steeplechase, is forthcoming in spring of 2026. She teaches in the Center for Writers at the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, where she lives with her dogs, Miss Bishop and Boy.
