Poetry is a disease

and the antidote

for poetry

is more poetry

The language

the words

hurt

Poetry

is not a symptom

but a sign

Things happen

too fast

for poetry

Prelude for the New Constitution of Chile

We

the oppressed, the forgotten, the rejected,

the dispossessed, the denied, the vexed,

the silenced, the humiliated, the neglected,

the tyrannized, the discriminated, the persecuted,

the abolished, the obliterated, the outcast, the relegated,

the underprivileged, the unprivileged,

the eternally burdened but indefatigable

we have at last been summoned to carve with fire our concerns, dreams and hopes

in the dark heart of this elusive and forgetful homeland.

Long has been the night. Long has been the waking and the martyrdom.

But the rebellious dignity has known how to wait and has never ceased in its struggle.

May these then be the flames that will illuminate the path that is just beginning to be glimpsed.

Housing, land, work, bread, health, education, independence, democracy,

freedom, justice, peace, dignity.

May this be the unrestricted spirit of our new fundamental charter.
